La Casa en el Arbol offers an exciting array of organized activities for its students. Some of the activities during the week are not included in the price of the weekly tuition. Weekend activities outside San Cristobal usually have a small cost for transportation, guide fees, and food.

All these activities are included in the Spanish immersion program.

Museums & Places to See

In town *** free to all our students ***



  • The Maya Medicine Development Center:
    This center still cures people using ancient Mayan medicine, mostly using plants. Birth are still given in a traditional way.

  • The Museum of Ambar:
    You will learn about the peculiarity of the ambar of chiapas as well as see unique pieces with incrusted insects. Tips about how to recognize real ambar will be given.

  • A paper workshop cooperative:
    This cooperative recycles paper making beautiful pieces of art as well as books. One technique consists of incrusting petals from a variety of colored flowers. Pre-Hispanic paper is also made.

  • The Museum of Traditional Costumes:
    This unique museum has rare costumes from indigenous villages. Each costume has a meaning and is characteristic to a village. The museum founder, our guide, spent his life healing people for free as well as building schools and water reservoirs in various communities..

  • San Cristóbal traditional market:
    You feel like going back in time. A must see!

  • Cofee museum:
    This short visit will guide you through the steps of how coffee is processed, from the land to your cup.

  • Na Bolom museum: This ethnographic collection reflects artifacts and gifts collected from trips the museum founders(Frans & Gertrude Duby Blom) made to the Lacandón jungle.

Mayan villages

  • CHAMULA
    This popular village proudly keeps strong traditions and character.
    The ceremonies occuring within the church of the main place are a mix of Maya culture & Catholic traditions.

  • ZINACANTAN
    This village keeps strong traditions too. It is famous for his clothes and fields of flowers.
    You may visit an indigenous back-strap loom weaving cooperative run by women.

Back-strap loom weaving Classes

Get to know talented indigenous women from Zinacantan while they teach you traditional back-strap loom weaving and embroidery. Weaving is a way of life in Zinacantan and very important to their culture and livelihood. This proves to be a very rich cultural experience for our students.

Mexican cooking classes

Fill your mouth with Spanish words and Mexican food! You will visit the local food market with your teacher to choose the perfect ingredients and then learn how to make rich traditional dishes like "pollo en mole", stuffed zucchini and "Chiapaneco" tamales.

Our classes are available in vegetarian cuisine as well!
